Toyota Unveils 7 Concept Cars At Tokyo Motor Show
The automaker views Tokyo Motor Show as a great opportunity to introduce new vehicle possibilities. Through the years, Toyota has unraveled several cars and groundbreaking and futuristic technologies in said auto show. Among the concept cars presented are the Fine-X and i-swing. The latter is a brand new fuel cell hybrid vehicle while the former is a personal mobility vehicle.
The theme Ecology & Emotion was again used by Toyota in this year's exhibit. Said exhibit pursued both environmental vehicle concerns as well as the essential emotional appeal of a car.
Toyota Fine-X concept vehicle is a revolutionary car that introduces a glimpse of what is to come in the future. It uses a fuel cell hybrid system that creates an environment-friendly performance. Fine-X also features a 4-wheel independent drive control and a huge steering angle mechanism.
The i-swing concept, on the other hand, is a personal mobility car that lets drivers express their individuality while driving. The car is designed with single-person vehicle package, which boasts its 'wearable' design. To soften impact, i-swing is equipped with a urethane body.
What is most exciting about this concept car is that it can shift from a two-wheeled mode to a -wheeled mode depending on the driver's discretion. In crowded streets, the driver can opt for the two-wheeled mode. Nonetheless, if desires to have a care-free ride he can choose the three-wheeled mode.
Another marvelous concept car is the Estima Hybrid. Said car is a sophisticated hybrid minivan with electric 4WD and THS II, for an environment-friendly and high-performance drive. Subsequently, enhanced Toyota RAV4 parts are incorporated in the new RAV4 concept car. The latter is a small SUV that features a modern and rugged theme for ultimate yet refined performance. It also employs S-VSC* + Active Control 4WD Integrated Control, which combines the electric 4WD system with electric power steering, ABS and VSC.
Toyota also created a concept car for the new-category vehicle, which is called FSC. Said concept combines the qualities of sedan and utility minivan. Its bB concept car, on the other hand, with 'sensually edgy attitude' is especially designed for young urbanites. Finally, the TF105 concept car is a F1 championship racing car, which is noted for its reliable engine and powerful performance.

Five Toyota New Concept Vehicles: In Brief
The PM is a personal mobility vehicle that fits car race. Its very small appearance makes it very sporty yet stylish. According to the Toyota website, the car's cutting-edge vehicle-to-vehicle communications technologies are employed under the concept of "meeting, linking and hanging out together".
The NLSV meanwhile, features a huge, wireless electric sliding door on the passenger side and a flatter and wider floor. On the exterior, it has a narrow bumper, but the interior is exceptionally wide.
Toyota rewrites the rules for conceptualizing hybrid cars in its production of the Hybrid X. The company says Hybrid X might establish the norm in building hybrid cars in the future. A key concept on this vehicle is the Vibrant Clarity. It is a design establishing all design works in a unique and emotionally vibrant identity that definitely speaks of Toyota.
It offers sustainable mobility for modern families. Through this car, Toyota is making one step closer to its vision of a zero smog-forming emission future because of its environmentally advanced technology.
Inside the car, the driver sets the mood using an internal interface that controls lighting, and music. Complete driver control is experienced through technological innovations in interactive navigation, driving information and comfort control.
Resembling a tamed tiger, the FT-SX is an exploration of an entirely new genre of automobile. This car delivers complete function, luxury and sporty performance, and is conveyed visually by its imposing size and sleek silhouette. Making it incredibly versatile are the powerful V6 engine, all-wheel drive, 21-inch wheels, four doors, an inventive rear hatch and multi-functional glass roof.
Loading large and heavy objects is easy in this car. A loading tray that automatically extends when the lower hatch is opened makes the rear cargo area extremely user-friendly.
The interior has a sleek, sporty design of the exterior, with "flying speed board" gauge clusters. Added to this is the luxury of natural woods, soft leathers and durable metals.
Finally, the FT-HS -- according to Toyota, the car answers the question "What sports car suits the 21st century concept?" The FT-HS is a mid-priced sports car that integrates ecology and emotion, pairing a potent hybrid power train with essential sports-car fundamentals.
Using a powerful V6 3.5L engine, the FT-HS is coupled with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive to produce a target power output of approximately 400 horsepower and a projected zero-to-60 acceleration in the four-second range.
The roof has a distinctive scooped-out section designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and provide head room at the key areas.
The FT-HS's interior features "create a dedicated driver's cockpit" that includes a cross-car instrument panel structure and delta-wing driver pod. Creating an enclosed pod effect an integrated instrument panel surrounds the driver. When the roof retracts, the 4 seats are converted to a seat good for two. This is another milestone from Toyota.
Common among this 5 and the other new concept cars are the well enhanced Toyota mufflers.

2007 Caparo T1
Since this car is so very light, you shouldn't expect to find a car with extras like a state of the art stereo system or nicely placed cup holders. The 2007 Caparo T1 is only a two seater and the car is made up of mostly carbon fiber to keep it so light. You will find adjustable roll bars, both in the front and the back of the car that are made of the carbon fiber. Also, the shell of the car is uniquely made so that it can help keep the car on the road, even while traveling at very high speeds. There are adjustable wings on the car in the front and the back, as well as fowler flaps and a diffuser to help keep the car from leaving the road.
On the inside of the car, there is no upholstery to be found, and the seating is arranged so one person sits behind the other, almost in a fighter jet style. There is also a special canopy that slides back and forth to let you in and out of the car, instead of having any heavy doors. Since you have the sliding canopy, you can drive the car with it open or closed, and either way it definitely provides an excellent ride. However, if you were looking for a car that boasted a leather interior with chrome trim, special lighting on the instruments and keyless entry, you are going to be sorely disappointed. The 2007 Caparo T1 has none of things, since they are not essential. This is a car built for speed and performance, and comfort and class are just not part of the package. You will find a 6 point harness in the car as well as a head protection system, and of course a variety of speed sensors and data logging equipment.
The 2007 Caparo T1 is a car that is designed by Caparo Vehicle Technologies and some of the names behind the car include Sean Butcher and Ben Scott-Geddes. This company has worked to bring you the best of a Formula 1 and Indy race cars and put it into a car that can be legally driven on the street. After taking some time to work out the kinks, now they offer a car that is reliable and that offers excellent performance. While many other sports cars that have this type of performance level are extremely highly priced, such as the Bugatti at $1.2 million, this car actually looks almost reasonable, starting out around $309,000.
Although more than likely most people are not going to purchase this car merely to drive around town, it is an excellent show of what technology can do with car design and power. Most people who consider this car will probably be taking it to the track for some fun; however, it can legally be taken for a spin on the street as well. Finally in 2007, these cars are now being produced and the company will actually deliver it to you if you order one. So, while it once started out as a concept car, it is now available for purchase, and in reality is a rather modestly priced when compared to other cars in its' class.

2007 Chery Fulwin
The 2007 Chery Fulwin was recently shown at the Beijing Motor Show and was definitely quite a hit. In fact, it was stated that it was actually one of the hottest vehicles to be shown at this show. The name Fulwin, actually translates to mean "wind cloud" and the car definitely looks like it could go like the wind. It combines together some very sharp lines with some slight curves that make it have a very eye catching look. The Chery company is wanting to see this car produced, and they may even give low cost cars, such as KIA a run for their money in the future.
With a sporty look and a two door design, it is no wonder that the 2007 Chery Fulwin made such an impact at the Beijing Motor Show. It is definitely a car that boasts great looks and Chery hopes to start actually producing the sports car sometime in 2008. One of the great things about this vehicle is the low price. While you get a sporty look and drive from this car, it is not overpriced and is great for the younger generation that wants a sporty car without a steep price.
Although other designs from Chery in the past have not pushed the design concepts to this level, it is a breath of fresh air to look at the 2007 Chery Fulwin. The car has a very sleek look and the front of the car looks light and fast. As you look towards the back of the vehicle it gets a bit broader and has heavier lines, which may be a bit unusual for this type of car; however, it definitely works with the overall look. Some have thought that the back of the car looked a bit heavy; however, the design of the fog lights and rear braking lights help to break up the look to make it appear sleek.
Chery is definitely one of the leading car manufacturers in China, and their new concept car, the 2007 Chery Fulwin definitely made an impact this past year. This company has been around for quite some time, and their other car models have definitely proven successful in the past. In the future they are looking forward to producing the new Fulwin, since it seems to have been such a hit. Chery is hoping to not only break into the Australian market, but they also want to break into the United States auto market as well. With a car like the Fulwin, it is definitely possible that they could break into these markets in the near future. The Chery Fulwin offers a chic and hot design that young people especially like as well as excellent technology.
If you are going to be looking for a nice, affordable sports car in the next few years, you may wan to consider the 2007 Chery Fulwin. Soon it will be in production and this hot new car will be available for purchase. Since it is made in China, you will probably be able to get the car for a much better deal than what you would pay for many of the American made sports cars. So, if you want something that is affordable but that looks great, the Fulwin is a car to keep your eye on.

The Mercury Hybrid: Protect The Future
Ford Airstream Concept
Together with travel trailers innovator Airstream, Ford has designed its Space Age vehicle using the HySeries Drive system. The system uses a 336 volt lithium ion battery to generate power to sustain a Ford Airstream for its initial 25 miles.
Ford Airstream is trying to pair its lithium-ion batteries with hydrogen fuel cells, giving it sufficient wattage to run the electric motor. The result is 305 miles of travel, much more than the 280 miles you get if running on hydrogen fuel cells alone.
Part of the costs in developing the HySeries Drive with Airstream was shouldered by the US Department of Energy. Ford also paired with Ballard, a Canadian company who makes the fuel cells for Ford hybrid cars. These partnerships are being undertaken to meet an expected demand of 3 million Ford hybrid cars by 2010.
A new Ford Fusion Hybrid to be released in 2008
It would have been named Futura, if not for a lawsuit filed by Pep Boys, an auto parts shop. Thus, Ford decided to call its latest hybrid entry Ford Fusion Hybrid after a midsize car popular in North America.
Fusion Hybrid will be the fourth among Ford hybrid cars already out in the market. Its predecessors include Mercury Mariner Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Mazda Tribute Hybrid.
Fusion Hybrid 2008 will maintain the PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) rating of the 4-cylinder 2006 Fusion. It will have a 2.3 liter engine which can generate 160 horsepower allowing you to drive at 30 mpg in highway conditions.

Vehicles Of The Future Showcased At LA Auto Show
The competition is about designing vehicles which will be attractive to car buyers 50 years from now hence the competition being called "Design Challenge: Robocar 2057". Designers should be able to explain why their designs would be popular fifty years down the road.
Last year's winner of the competition is the Hummer O2. The said futuristic vehicle won the competition centered on eco-friendly automotive technology. The Hummer O2 design is powered by fuel cell and has the capability to purify the air around it. Algae-filled body panels of the futuristic vehicle transform carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. Apart from that, the O2 is also made from 100 percent recycled materials.
This year's winner is the Volkswagen Concept Slipstream. Said vehicle is basically a pod fit for a single person. On city streets, it travels in an upright position to occupy less space than vehicles of today. On special highways, the pod will travel horizontally at speeds reaching 250 miles per hour. The Slipstream is the brainchild of designers at Volkswagen/Audi Design Center in Santa Monica, California.
Another vehicle which deserves recognition is the Mercedes-Benz Silver Flow. According to Marty Bernstein writing for The Auto Channel: "Designers of the Silver Flow envision a multi-dimensional vehicle composed of micro metallic particles that rearrange themselves to become a vehicle of a specific shape, literally by pressing a button on a magnetic assembler. The shape can be selected by the driver. Inspired by Mercedes-Benz racing vehicles from a bygone age this concept was created by the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design of North America in Irvine, CA."
Japanese automaker Mazda put forth a radically-designed vehicle named the Motonari RX. Said vehicle is described by Bernstein saying: "Crumpled silver paper? No, the Motonari is made of a 100 percent, re-prototypable carbon fiber nano tube shape memory alloy weave with a photovoltaic coating (which, by the way, is yet to be invented). The interface between the driver and the vehicle is a driving suit made of millions of microscopic actuators, which enables the driver to experience the road psycho-somatically while making the driver and vehicle indistinguishable from each other. This sensational ride comes from Mazda R&D of North America in Irvine, CA."
While the design put forth by automakers at the Los Angeles Auto Show are futuristic, they are sure to have reliable parts like Bilstein shocks if ever they are mass produced.

Scion Launches Bigger xB at Chicago Auto Show
The so-called urban utility vehicle was first introduced to the public in 2003 and from then on, it has received quite a warm welcome from car buyers. The Scion xB is characterized by its boxy design and this has already become a distinction for Scion cars. It would seem that Scion car buyers loved the boxy design of the xB because the latest model of the vehicle is made even bigger and still has a boxy design. The latest installment of the Scion xB is the result of the feedbacks of xB owners that they wanted a bigger car.
The all new Scion xB is the result of a designing process that aims for distinction. Some of its exterior design elements are from the Scion t2B concept car that the brand showcased during the 2005 New York International Auto Show. Style characteristics like the angles between the cars panels, the high beltline, inset taillights, rectangular grille, and the distinct fenders are all taken from the concept vehicle.
The result of the integration of such design elements to the new Scion xB resulted to a more aggressive looking design. The vehicle now comes with the radical design elements and is now popular among the younger car buyers. Sure enough, the all-new version of the vehicle will surely not disappoint.
The exterior design is not the only improvement that the Scion xB has over the previous model. The redeveloped xB is much roomier than the old models. The wheelbase was increased by four inches and the overall length by twelve inches. The width of the vehicle is also increased by three inches while the height was decreased by more than an inch to ensure a comfortable ride. The wheels are also bigger than the ones used by the current xB model - the newest xB sports 16-inch wheels.
Car buyers can also choose between three wheel covers. The brakes that the new Scion xB will use will also be bigger than what is being used on the current model. Brake discs for the front wheels will be a 10.83-inch ventilated disc, while a 10.98-inch disc will be installed at the rear. These are about a couple of inches larger than what the first generation of Scion xBs used. The vehicle can also perform better if OEM parts of high quality are used. Just like Volvo OEM parts which makes parts replacement easy and gives reliable performance.
The interior of the 2008 Scion xB is also given much attention. This is evident in the lounge-like interior of the urban utility vehicle. And since the vehicle is made bigger, the cargo space is significantly increased. The cargo hold behind the rear seats offer 29.1 cubic feet of space. If that is not enough, the rear seat can be folded down flat which would dramatically increase the cargo space. The rear seat's 60/40 split configuration makes this car one of the more versatile load carrying cars there is. In addition to the fold down rear seats, the front seats can also be fully reclined which would even add more to cargo capacity.
Power is also upgraded for the new generation xB. Its powerplant is a 2.4-liter double overhead cam four cylinder engine. The engine is equipped with a variable valve timing technology which increases its fuel efficiency. The new xB's engine can provide 158 horsepower which is a huge increase from the 103 horsepower that the previous models' engine can produce.

All-New X-Trail Unveiled At Geneva Auto Show
The Asian brand has finally shown the European auto scene what they have developed to replace the previous generation of the X-Trail. It can be remembered that the first generation of X-Trail received a very warm acceptance from car buyers across the global market. Nissan is now hard pressed to come up with a new version of the X-Trail which will exhibit the characteristics of the old X-Trail and which also will add to the mix new features that will make the new Nissan X-Trail more convincing for car buyers to purchase.
To come up with an idea of what they need to do to the second generation of X-Trails, Nissan has conducted a survey among their customers and asked what areas and features of the X-Trail did they like. The result showed that the majority of Nissan X-Trail owners loved the vehicle for its practicality, design, ease of use, and, of course, driving performance.
Nissan's Executive Vice President for Corporate Strategy and Product Planning, Carlos Tavares, emphasized on these attributes of the X-Trail in his speech at the unveiling of the vehicle. "Customers love X-Trail's convenience, its practicality, its strong performance and off-road capability. When we planned the new X-Trail, we were determined to keep those X-Trail roots, but enhance the entire vehicle," Tavares said.
It is apparent that Nissan has restyled the new generation X-Trail but it still retains the robust and strong shape that auto enthusiasts liked about the original X-Trail. The shoulder line, glasshouse, and the window lines are similar to the first generation X-Trail. The new generation of the vehicle looks good enough even without a Nissan car bra.
While there are design concepts copied from the original Nissan X-Trail, the newest version offers an improved interior comfort and a new kind of practicality for every driver or passenger. While the interior of the vehicle offers comfort and convenience, it also offers practicality. This is shown in the placement of the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel which makes it easily visible to the driver. While allowing that, the placement also provides ample room for the center console.
The versatility and practicality of the new generation Nissan X-Trail is evident in its trunk. When compared to the previously released X-Trail, the new generation sports 145 liters more of trunk space at 555 liters. The design of the trunk and the enlargement of the area behind the last row of seats allowed the integration of a sliding drawer under the trunk floor. The space underneath the floor gives the Nissan X-Trail owners extra luggage space and a place to stow away valuable items.
The versatility of the X-Trail is further exhibited in the drawer with its partition walls which can be positioned in various ways. But if the owner of the new X-Trail needs more luggage space without having to use the drawer underneath the floor, both the drawer and the floor can be taken out.
Since the Nissan X-Trail is made to handle not so ordinary road conditions, it is equipped with a four-wheel drive configuration. Nissan has introduced their all-wheel drive system ALL MODE for the first generation X-Trail. It is only logical that the new version of the vehicle should also have an improved version of the all-wheel drive system. The current version of the system is now called as the ALL MODE 4x4i.
Improvements over the previous version of the vehicle include the Downhill Drive Support (DDS), and Uphill Drive Support (UPS). The DDS is activated manually via a switch in the center console. This system maintains a speed of 7 km/h when going downhill. This means that the driver can concentrate solely on steering instead of having to worry about the speed of the vehicle. The UDS, on the other hand, is automatic in nature. The system kicks in when it detects more than a 10 percent incline. The system activates the brakes until the driver starts to move forward.

Tokyo Motor Show Presents The Future
Nissan Motor Co. introduced the egg-shaped Pivo 2, which can turn its wheels sideways to slot into a parking space. Inside the car is a "robotic agent" that recognizes that recognizes the driver's face, senses his mood and speak to him.
Honda Motor Co. flaunted the Puyo which features a gel-filled, squashable body covering as well as ludicrously small wheels at each corner. The "silky feel" interior is similarly flexible, with controls increasing through the stretching membrane when the fuel-cell Puyo starts up.
Toyota Motor Corp., not wanting to be upstaged, showcased the RiN that is said to encourage drivers to "to re-evaluate themselves and... to turn their attention to society and nature, producing a healthy rhythm for both mind and body".
One of the stunners at the motor show was the Audi Metro Project quattro. This car has more normal proportions than the lightweight A2, which was a car before its time, and with its giant, mesh-filled front grille and shapely roofline. It is quite the sporty coupe but it is a Quattro as well. But not as aficionados know it. The 1.4-litre engine is borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf and has 150 base horsepower, but there is also a 41 base horsepower electric motor. So it is a hybrid, and CO2 emissions are calculated at an average 112g/km by the EC official test method.
The crush around the Audi was almost frightening; the crush around the Nissan GT-R was even greater, but then this is the latest incarnation of Japan's most cult-sustaining supercar, said John Simister of The Independent. This version has a 480bhp, twin-turbo, 3.8-litre V6 and is designed to be able to maintain more than 180mph, whatever the outside temperature may be.
Mitsubishi Motor Corp. presented an electric coupé version of the i-car dubbed as the MiEV and Concept ZT, a ruggedly handsome wagon which is destined for production as a new Sigma. It flaunts a "clean" diesel engine, showing that the previously diesel-hating Japanese car market is slowly recognizing the diesel engine's advantages, provided it does not pollute.
Mazda Motor Corp.'s Taiki joined the three other concept cars in the company's Nagare - it means "embodiment of movement" series. More than any of the others, this latest interpretation, with its rear wheels remote from the body in separate pods, looks as if its body was moulded by the passage of wind or water, said Simister. Whether future production Mazdas will be able to use this idea will be interesting to observe, he continued.
The future is just around the corner. And expect things to evolve with it soon. In less than no time, water pump Canada and other auto parts accessories may not be the same as what they are today.

Green, Mean, Wacky Cars At Tokyo Motor Show
This year's motor show is aimed at showcasing thrilling cars designed to captivate the hearts of the next-generation drivers. Amid declining sales in their home market, Japanese automakers have strived to unravel the best concepts that they could offer.
From bubble-shaped fantasy vehicles to sleek petrol-guzzling sports cars, lightweight hybrids and cars designed to feel like riding a rollercoaster, automakers touted their own unique visions of the future, reported the AFP. Rivals flaunted their green credentials with an array of environmentally friendly vehicles crammed into a convention centre near the capital, as record high oil prices prompt unprecedented interest in fuel-efficient motoring.
The auto industry is entering an "era of unprecedented change," said Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn, adding that his company hopes to start mass marketing of electric cars by 2012. "The age of sustainable mobility is closer than anyone realizes."
The Toyota Motor Corp. is among automakers trying to lighten the load so as to reduce fuel consumption, unveiling the 1/X (pronounced one-Xth) plug-in hybrid. The concept car is said to be two-thirds lighter than the Prius and twice as fuel efficient thanks to the use of carbon fiber materials.
"We have gone back to the basics and reconsidered everything," said Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe, who trundled onto the stage on the i-REAL, which resembles a high-tech armchair on wheels.
Both Toyota and Honda Motor Co. strived to alleviate the image of sports cars as gas guzzlers with concept hybrids running on a mix of gasoline and electricity. Honda flaunted the Puyo with a "gel body" to improve safety and "the feel of an adorable pet."
"Nobody's ignoring or bypassing any particular technology," said Ghosn. But it is not all about saving the planet: Nissan took the wraps off its hotly anticipated GT-R supercar, hoping that there is still a market for high-performance muscle machines despite the buzz around hybrids.
And from the Mazda Motor Corp. came Taiki, a concept sports car with a captivating styling and wind-swept design.
"Generally my observations of most sporty cars are: they look great and sales start out great but they decay very rapidly," said Christopher Richter, auto analyst at investment bank CLSA. "You can imagine why makers put sporty cars into their line-ups rather sparingly."
Among the more wacky designs on the motor show was Suzuki's Sharing Coach which looks more like a small spacecraft than a car, with two smaller one-person PIXY pods on wheels that fit snugly inside.
"The Japanese market is still ranked third in the world. But the situation is not good for Japanese automakers," said Hirofumi Yokoi, an analyst at auto consultants CSM Worldwide. "Young Japanese have a different lifestyle. They are not interested in purchasing big-ticket items like cars."
Apparently, it is high time to step on EBC Active Brakes Direct and try more environment-friendly auto technologies. "The future is not just about hybrids," concluded Richter. "When I talk to automakers I sense a lot of uncertainty about what is going to be the dominant technology going forward."

At the Frankfurt Auto Show: the Volvo Recharge Concept
The Recharge is product of a combination of a number of the latest technological innovations called "series hybrid" making no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels. The battery pack is a lithium-polymer battery. When the battery runs dry, the four-cylinder 1.6 liter engine powers up.
The hybrid system is also backed up by an efficient generator, the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). It comes in when the battery runs short of power for the drive.
The driver controls the four-cylinder Flexifuel engine manually by means of a button in the instrument panel. It allows the driver to start the engine earlier to prolong the life of the battery. The internal combustion engine starts if 70 percent of the battery power had already been used up.
"There is a considerable difference between our plug-in hybrid and today's hybrids. Today's hybrids use the battery only for short periods to assist the combustion engine. Our solution is designed for most people to run on electric power all the time, while providing the extra security that comes with having a combustion engine as a secondary source of electrical power," says Ichiro Sugioka, project manager for the Volvo ReCharge Concept.
Also according to Sugioka, the Volvo ReCharge concept has its lively and sporty driving properties, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9 seconds and can reach the top speed of 160 km/h. Inside, the cabin is equipped with interior auto parts (like auto floor mats) meant to give the passengers a comfortable ride.
"This is a ground-breaking innovation for sustainable transportation. A person driving less than 100 kilometres a day will rarely need to visit a filling station. In the USA, this may apply to almost 80 percent of drivers," says Magnus Jonsson.
The battery can be fully charged within three hours, but a one hour quick charge can already reach 50 km according to Jonsson. "This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity in intended markets comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power," Jonsson added.

GM Envisions Design For The E-Flex
Now the pool of engineers and designers behind the automaker's Chevy Volt and other environmentally-friendly vehicles is going all out to make sure the cars' visual appeal blends with its ultra-modern magnetism. "GM is once more a design-driven company, so it's only natural that design keeps pace with the engineering development of the E-flex system," Vice Chairman Bob Lutz recently wrote in a blog on GM's Web site.
The E-Flex is the powertrain system behind a new generation of electrically driven vehicles GM intends to manufacture by the end of the decade. The system matches battery power with several different energy sources. The largest American automaker's success is anchored on the development of a lithium ion battery with the durability, endurance, and affordability to make the car appealing to average consumers. While hundreds of engineers and a number of battery suppliers undertake that job, Lutz said that GM's top designers will dig in as well.
The Detroit automaker has opened a design studio inside its Warren Technical Center campus to fine-tune the design of the Volt and vehicles built on the same architecture. Bob Boniface, the GM director of advanced design, will lead the design work on the Volt. He was lead designer for the Chevy Camaro concept vehicle and the hydrogen fuel cell Sequel concept vehicle. Boniface previously worked for DaimlerChrysler's Advanced Product Design Studio, managing the architectural design of Chrysler minivans.
Lutz said that the exterior styling of the Volt is 90 percent complete and will include all the key design cues of the Volt concept GM showed off in January at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The Volt's front end, with its brawny face, wide bumper and narrow headlights separated by the narrow dual port grille, will be slightly less dramatic, he said, to accommodate safety regulations while fitting with GM's global architecture for small cars.
"This vehicle is so important that it is getting maximum attention from all of the top Product Development leadership and from the senior people in powertrain," Lutz noted. "A Volt leadership team meets every two weeks to hammer out glitches and keep up momentum on the project."
The steps taken by GM are not that unusual. The design of the Subaru cold air intake in connection with the company's lineup would also reflect the same. But the level of detail GM is making public is out of the ordinary. GM's strategy aims to cultivate an Earth-friendly image at a time when the environment is a hot-button concern, while discrediting critics who have dismissed the Volt as a publicity feat.
Lutz said last month that GM had probably spent "at this point" $100 million, "but ramping up very fast as it becomes a high-priority product for launch in 2010." GM has spent about $4 billion on advanced propulsion budget the past five or six years, he said.
GM must walk a fine line in designing the Volt, said Rebecca Lindland, a Global Insight analyst in Lexington, Mass. History has reflected that hybrid shoppers gravitate toward distinct vehicles. The Toyota Prius hybrid, for one, looks unlike any other vehicle on the road. It is outselling the Camry hybrid more than three to one this year.
The Volt would not succeed unless it is visually appealing, Lindland said. Lutz has promised that the Volt would not "look like a science experiment." Hybrid buyers, Lindland said, "really want people to know what good people they are."

Acura's Future Cars
The all new 2.3-liter i-VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder yields 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It is paired to a five-speed manual-automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Standard with this vehicle is Acura's Super Handling All Wheel Drive system, standard front, side, and side curtain air bags. The vehicle also comes with Acura's navigation system with real-time traffic reports and an ELS DVD-Audio surround sound stereo system. The RDX will form part of the small, premium cross over segment, along with the Land Rover Freelander and the Audi Q5. An SUV competed with the Mercedes-Benz ML and the Lexus RX300, the 2008 Acura MDX is built to straight at the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne.
To have the same level of performance as it competitors, Acura's engineers built the vehicles parts at Germany s Nurburgring, which is known for its ability to produce quality parts that will give driving dynamics. The exterior of the new MDX exposes several refinements. Frank Paluch, the chief engineer of both the original and second-generation MDX models, asserted that their aim was to provide a stealth family package. This was done by the design team through lowering the visual center of the new MDX, which they call the C-line. The D-pillar was also angled sharply forward to blend with the third row seating. Paluch added the new MDX looks smaller, but wider, longer, and lower. Acura is doubted about power train performance, but Paluch says their goal is for best-in-class V-6 performance. Last, but certainly not the least among Acura cars, is the 2009 NSX. The conceptualization of the next NSX is not yet final.
Automobilemag.com said Honda is still in the process of finalizing what kind of car it should be and what will its appearance be. The mid-engine Honda HSC concept will no longer be seen on the next NSX. The new vehicle will have front-engine, and not mid-engine as compared to the first mentioned car. Honda Motor CEO Takeo Fukui decreed a ten-cylinder engine that frustrated employees from Japan to California to Ohio , who would like to develop a V-8 that could be used across a wider product range, such as a proper flagship sedan for Acura.

Nissan Concept Vehicles Inspired by Xbox & Adidas
Nissan is one company which has taken inspiration from other industries and fused them with their concept vehicles. While these vehicles may not be available to the public, it is evidence that Nissan can design and manufacture such advanced cars. Two of their most notable concept vehicles are inspired by the Xbox 360 and Adidas. The Xbox 360 inspired concept vehicle is the Nissan Urge while the Adidas-inspired one is named the Nissan Note.
The Urge is a roadster which according to Nissan is "motorcycle-inspired". This futuristic vehicle combines futuristic driving and realistic gaming. This is because the Urge concept can be used to play "Project Gotham Racing 3". The concept car is the result of the partnership between Microsoft and the Nissan Design America Inc. The Nissan Urge truly combines gaming with driving since a person can play PGR 3 using the steering wheel, accelerator, and brake pedals of the vehicle. This is made possible by the hard work put into the design and construction of the vehicle by Nissan designers and Microsoft engineers.
The vehicle is equipped with the "Xbox 360™ next-generation video game and entertainment system from Microsoft" according to Nissan. The player can use the controls of the car while viewing the action through the 7-inch LCD screen that doubles as a rear view mirror when the car is used for actual driving.
This concept gaming car was unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. While this particular car is years away from production, it shows how car manufacturers are tuned to the ongoing trend among the new generation of car buyers. If this car is fitted with the same powerful engine used in the Nissan Z car and all its components such as Nissan distributor caps, spark plugs, and the like, one can experience an exhilarating driving experience both in the virtual and the real world.
The impact of the younger generation on the future design of Nissan vehicles is explained by Bruce Campbell, the Vice-President of Nissan Design America. "Nissan conducted an Internet survey of 2,000 eco boomers, a majority of which said technology and gaming are among the most important attributes in their first car," Campbell said. "Xbox 360 offered the latest in technology and was already a favorite among this audience," he added. According to the company: "A Nissan URGE driver can, for example, maneuver through the streets of New York, park the car and fire up the Xbox 360, then virtually race through the same streets using the same steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal - blurring fantasy and reality in a way that the automotive world has never before seen."
Another Nissan concept vehicle is based on the mini MPV produced by Nissan for the Japanese and European market - the Nissan Note. The concept vehicle is inspired by German sports apparel manufacturer Adidas. The decision to design a vehicle inspired by Nissan is aimed to catch the attention of the younger generation of car buyers. The current fashion tend being sportswear like those created by Adidas, Nissan developed a vehicle that will embody the same traits that Adidas products posses.
One of the most notable characteristic of these products is the color that is why Nissan created the Adidas inspired Note with youth-oriented colors. To make the concept Note standout, Nissan designed "wearable" items for the vehicle. Of these, the seats are the most notable since consumers have the power to change the covers to match their preference or mood. Aside from this, materials used on sportswear like rubber are used on the vehicle's interior.
While the Adidas inspired Note and the Urge Concept are just what they are, concept cars, their development shows what Nissan is capable of. Whether they will be mass produced is another story. But for those who love gaming, individuality and driving, there is reason to hope for a brighter future in terms of automobile development.

Nissan To Pull The Wraps Off New Livina
Livina, the second variant of the automaker's new family of global cars, will not be camouflaged by a Nissan tonneau cover for a long time because it is set to go on sale in China late April. Then it will be offered to other global markets to boost the standing of the automaker in the worldwide auto sales realm.
The all-new Livina, a compact seven-seat minivan, is introduced by Nissan and its affiliate Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company at the Guangzhou International Motor Show on July 6, 2006. The vehicle is powered by the Nissan MR18DE engine and other efficient auto parts from the Japanese automaker.
According to the automaker, the Nissan Livina will be its first in a line of new global vehicles, and is the first Nissan vehicle to debut in China before being released in other countries. "In July 2006, Nissan announced plans to introduce a series of new cars for our key global markets, with a sales forecast of 200,000 units per year. This new family of global cars represents a substantial investment for Nissan," said Nissan's executive vice president Carlos Tavares. "We expect the Livina, our second new model in this family, to make a significant contribution to our business globally as it is expected to become a high-volume model," he continued.
The first variant of the vehicle was unveiled by the automaker in China in November last year. The variant was based on the product concept of 'active and high quality', and the Livina was engineered to deliver a high-level of agility and ride comfort, with the most spacious interior for a vehicle in its class. The exterior of the vehicle features a bold and elegant styling while the well-equipped interior flaunts the neat and refined finish.
Same with other variants of the automaker in the family of global cars, the new Livina has been engineered to offer utmost comfort, safety and performance. The minivan, designed and engineered at the automaker's Technical Center in Atsugi, Japan, is currently built on a Renault-Nissan Alliance platform.
Earlier, the PT Nissan Motor Indonesia unveiled the new Grand Livina in Jakarta. The Grand Livina, manufactured in a recently expanded and refurbished plant of NMI, is expected to contribute substantially to the sales of the automaker in Indonesia.
"The Grand Livina is an irrefutable example of Nissan's commitment to our customers in Indonesia. With seven variants in two engine sizes, we expect the Grand Livina to be a popular choice for Indonesian customers. For 2007, we expect sales of this model to reach 12,000 units, out of our total domestic sales of 21,000 units," intimated Nissan's COO Toshiyuki Shiga, who is in charge with the Livina's launch in Jakarta.

Asian Brands to Showcase Concept Vehicles at New York Auto Show
Aside from that, Asian branded vehicles are relatively priced lower than that of their U.S. counterparts. In the upcoming New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), these Asian brands look to increase their popularity among American auto enthusiasts by showcasing their concept vehicles at the said event. While these vehicles may take some time before they are put into production, their unveiling at the country's largest motor show will increase the popularity of their brand.
One Asian brand that has been making waves in the U.S. auto scene is Honda. At the upcoming New York Auto Show, the company will unveil its Accord Coupe Concept. The concept vehicle will provide a glimpse of what the new generation Accord will be like. The concept vehicle is powered by a V6 engine designed to reduce fuel consumption and lessen harmful emissions.
The newest technology from Honda that will be showcased at the event is the Variable Cylinder Management. Aside from that, the concept vehicle will also be featuring Honda's ACE Body Structure which is essentially a design system which gives the front-end of the vehicle the ability to absorb a substantial amount of energy in the event of front end collision.
Toyota, now the second largest car manufacturer in the world, continues its surge to get to the top of the list. Their good performance in terms of sale has been a gauge of how popular Toyota is in the United States. Their continuing quest for supremacy in the U.S. auto market leads them to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan with the Toyota FT HS concept vehicle in tow.
The Toyota FT HS is a hybrid sports car which comes combining the fuel economy of a hybrid electric vehicle with the high performance and good looks of a sports car. The concept is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine mated with an advanced hybrid system and a powerful battery pack. The concept vehicle is estimated to rocket to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in less than four seconds. Aside from that powerful acceleration, the concept vehicle is also estimated to have a very high top speed, thanks to its power output of nearly 400 hp. That amount of power and torque in a hybrid vehicle is unheard of before and only EBC Greenstuff brake pads can provide good stopping power to.
These concept vehicles are proof of the competition between the two Japanese car makers and their drive to increase their foothold on the U.S. auto market. Both the Honda Accord Coupe Concept and the Toyota FT HS will be showcased at the New York International Auto Show which will open its doors on the sixth of April and will end on the fifteenth of the same month.

XC70: Volvo For All Seasons
Arp added, "This segment has been our specialty ever since we invented it back in the 1950s. Our competitors can count on us remaining number one in the future, too. In the all-new V70, rear passengers and luggage both ride in first class." Volvo is now aiming to introduce the Volvo XC70 in China to reach third place in the model's sales statistics. Arp noted, "There is a considerable appetite for cars with pronounced attitude on the fast-growing Chinese market. The Volvo XC90 is already very popular and we are convinced the all-new XC70 will play a significant role in our plans for continued fast sales growth in China."
"Our successful XC range will soon be expanded with the new XC60. With three exciting XC models, we will cover even more of the growing number of car buyers who want the very best of two worlds - capable muscles and luxurious, comfortable passenger-car comfort," added Arp. "And it all began with the XC70, which has now become even more attractive than before."
Volvo made the XC70 sportier, bolder and more functional because it was engineered to accommodate weather changes and season transitions. The pool of Volvo engineers significantly upgraded the levels of road capability and refinement to pave way for a more appealing vehicle that ensures unmatched levels of athleticism, versatility and safety which are characteristically Volvos.
The all-new Volvo XC70 is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.2-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine and a 2.4-litre five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel engine. "With an active chassis, the car's driving properties improve in all situations," said Volvo Cars XC70 Project Director, Tomas Ahlborg. "It becomes both safer and more entertaining to drive." To boost the performance of the engines and the chassis, the estate is equipped with a Volvo fan clutch. Other remarkable features include the dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC), which improves stability; the power parking brake (PPB) that automatically disengages when the accelerator is pressed; and the digital signal processing (DSP) audio system.
The all-new Volvo XC70 is also equipped with dynamic styling emphasized by a catchy sporty design, a raked windscreen, tailgate angles, C30-inspired taillights and blacked-out side pillars mated to the usual off-road body kit. "The dark-coloured plastic panels at the bottom are less obvious than on the current model. But as with exclusive outdoor clothing, the protection is placed exactly where it needs to be to withstand the rough stuff," said Volvo Cars Design Director, Steve Mattin.

Volt coming in 2010...GM not sure if it will work
Lutz also said that they are expecting for a fully functional Volt by the end of 2007 and further added that GM would unveil all of the development process to the media. "We have set an integral target of production in 2010. Whether we can make that or not, this is still kind of an unpredictable program for us," Lutz told reporters at the Geneva Motor Show. He also added, "We're sort of outside our comfort zone."
GM has also explained its broad plans for the all-electric Volt which it has previously unveiled at last year's Detroit Auto Show unfortunately the automaker has declined in disclosing the production timeline for the Volt.
It is no secret that GM has suffered great losses with its gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles and trucks which makes some critics and competitors doubtful of whether the automaker can really push through with its Volt concept or will just capitalize on the publicity that the concept car has generated. To which Lutz answered, "Competitors who write this off as a PR exercise are going to be brutally surprised."
Electric cars to which the plug-in hybrid Volt also belongs have gain strong support from the US environmental groups due to the fact that vehicles such as the Volt help in reducing oil consumption as well as the emission of harmful greenhouse gas plus the fact that electric cars cab be recharged with power drawn from a cleaner-burning electric grid.
The world's largest producer of quality GM mirror covers has dumped an earlier experiment made on an electric car which was marketed in California as the EV1 which has made GM as the center of criticism and the primary character in the 2006 documentary "Who killed the electric car?" But according to GM, it will make up for its once-failed idea of a mass-market electric car with the production of the Volt.
The automaker said that the Volt is a much better electric car since it draws its power exclusively from a next-generation battery pack capable of being recharged by a small onboard engine or through a normal electric outlet. General Motors has further stated that it is aiming for the Volt to be able to run 40 miles on pure electric power in short driving a day without using gasoline.
Lutz also said that GM's initial work had shown that there is a need to shed off some of the bold styling cues that are present on the Volt concept including the extreme front placement of the wheels. Lutz added, "I know that we cannot make the production car look like the concept. The whole shape of the car is going to have to be a little more traditional. I would say there is still a 10 percent chance this will fail."
General Motors has obtained an eleven percent rise for its US retail sales last February which Lutz said is the result of the launching of new products and the restructuring program that the automaker has been employing.

Cars of the Future Compared
BMW will revive the Z8 roadster in its 2010 model. This 650Ci convertible will range from $90,000-to-$125,000. It will be powered by a 400-plus-hp turbo version of BMW's 4.4-liter V-8 mated to a new dual-clutch gearbox. Other engines--larger and smaller--may find their way under the hood as well.
The pint size BMW X1 will be added to the X5, the just-freshened X3, and a two-door X6 due in 2008. The compact SUV market might seem an unlikely place for a premium German marque, but BMW won't be alone. Audi will be there with the Volkswagen Tiguan-derived Q3, as will Mercedes-Benz with its GLK.
These three share common characteristics. Aside from the fact that they all have well-to-do female customers, they also would want to make the car seats higher, to surround their vehicles with lots of active and passive safety equipment, and to own a premium product with a versatile interior. They are less interested in size and high-performance engines. They are also value-focused, which is why the X1 will be priced about the same as a loaded Toyota RAV4.
At roughly 170 inches long, the X1 will combine the footprint of the 1-series and packaging similar to that of the X3. The large wheels and the suspension come from the X3. The underbody, the drivetrain, and the electronics will be taken from the 1-series. The X1's more carlike DNA is reflected in its target weight of 3400 pounds, significantly lighter than the X3. The X1 is principally a four-seater, but since the rear chairs slide and fold, an optional fifth seat could be integrated. BMW may offer a variety of opening and see-through roof treatments.
Indeed, BMW is readying a stretched version of the next 6-series, which would feature four doors and four seats under a coupe like roof. To its credit, the BMW team is taking a somewhat different approach from Mercedes-Benz. The LC5 CLS Fighter will be seen without B-pillars. Instead, the structural integrity of the body will be supported by overlapping doors (the rear ones always shut first and open last) plus reinforced sills and side panels. All seats feature integrated belts and side air bags. The oval-shaped lateral aperture and the connected door skins are supposed to help spread out the energy in the event of a side impact. The engine lineup consists of four units: a 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six; a 400-hp, 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8; an M version powered by a 550-hp, 5.5-liter V-10; and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder diesel.
Transmission offerings are to include a conventional six-speed manual and two automatics, where one is a dual-clutch design. Both automatics will feature seven speeds and optional paddle-shift operation. The gear selector is a joystick with two parallel shift modes: flick it to the left, and you're in manual; flick it to the right, and you're in automatic. Pushing a button on top of the lever engages park. Car enthusiasts will also see new electro hydraulic brakes, active steering, and wheels ranging in size from eighteen to twenty inches. It is not yet clear whether the new arrival will be part of the 6-series family or whether BMW would rather launch it as a 7-series coupe. Either way, the car is expected to reach showrooms in 2011, shortly after the next 6-series coupe/ convertible--and, coincidentally, around the same time as the second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS, the car that started it all.
Audi will be launching its A1 minicompact. It will be smaller-than-A3 entry that emphasizes performance over economy. Unlike the discontinued European-market A2, the A1 will be a two-door hatch. An S1 version would likely use a 240-hp, 2.0-liter turbo; a less-potent turbo four would power the base car.
Finally, Honda's latest take on fuel cells is the FCX concept. Although its ultra-cab-forward body looks dramatically long, low, and wide, at 186 inches (15.5 feet) in overall length, the FCX is actually shorter than the Acura RL. It features a compact, Honda-developed fuel-cell stack in the middle of the car with two hydrogen tanks in the rear. The stack is much smaller than what is now technologically feasible, but Honda says that it shows "our dream."
The novel four-wheel-drive system has one front 80-kW electric motor with two in-wheels, 25-kw motors at the rear. The cabin has a mixture of traditional Japanese materials, such as a wood floor, plus the latest gizmos. The dashboard rises up toward the driver as speed rises, which is supposedly to hold the driver's attention.
If you want to know their air filters, the site on K&N Filters can help you.

The Future Car by Bugatti
The development of the vehicle started with the EB 18/3 "Veyron" concept car back in 1999 designed be Hartmut Warkuss of Volkswagen. The appearance of the concept car is very similar to the final production car but sported a W18 engine and three banks of six cylinders instead of the W16 engine. At the 2001 Geneva Motor Show, former VW chairman, Ferdinand Piëch announced the production of Veyron but will be using W16 engine that promised a top speed of 250 mph. Development continued throughout 2001 and the production was pushed back by delays and setbacks on the design. This is mainly due to the difficulty of keeping a car stable at high-speed. One Veyron prototype crashed and another spun out while being demonstrated publicly in Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. By 2003, Piëch retired as chairman of Volkswagen and was replaced by Bernd Pischetsrieder, who sent the Veyron project back to the drawing board to resolve the major issues. Bugatti later announced that the car would be officially called Bugatti Veyron 16.4.
Under the hood, the Veyron 16.4 features a W16 engine with 4 banks of 4 cylinders. The engine looks like two V8 engines merged into one. The engine is equipped with 4 turbochargers and displaces 8.0 L with a square 86 x 86 mm bore and stroke. It also uses a dual-clutch DSG computer-controlled manual transmission and 7 gear ratios using shifter paddles behind the steering wheel that makes an 8ms shift time possible. It can also be driven by full automatic transmission. The Veyron runs at full-time all-wheel drive that was developed by Haldex and uses special Michelin run-flat tires designed specifically for the Veyron. The wheelbase measures at 2.7 meters while the length is 4.4 meters and width at almost 2 meters (1.99 meters) and 1.2 meters in height. The engine comes with 3 radiators for its cooling system, another one exclusively for the air-to-liquid intercoolers, 2 for the air conditioning, 1 for the transmission oil, 1 for the engine oil and 1 for the hydraulic oil used by the spoilers with a total of 10 radiators simultaneously operating for the Veyron 16.4.
The Veyron 16.4 is the quickest production car to reach 62 mph with an estimated time of 2.5 seconds. As a matter of fact, Veyron's 0-200 mph time is quicker than McLaren F1's 120-200 mph time. Thus making it the quickest-accelerating production car up to date. Because of this, the Veyron 16.4 also consumes more fuel than any other production car. At full throttle, the Veyron can empty its 100 L fuel tank in just 12.5 minutes.

Lincoln MKR Concept, Unleashed
According to Peter Horbury, Ford's head of design for the Americas, Lincoln designers will choose from these seven defining Lincoln characteristics to create a family resemblance among the brand's vehicles. Sometimes, designers will use three of the magic seven elements. Sometimes they will use five. Or more. Or less. The 415-horsepower, rear-drive Lincoln MKR show car uses all seven of 'em.
Lincoln MKR shares the D2C platform with Ford Mustang. TwinForce engine family is introduced in the car. The engine is a 3.5L engine twin-turbo, direct-injection gasoline V6, which is also capable of running on bioethanol. It produces 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet if torque.
"The Lincoln MKR Concept is sophisticated and modern, resembling an athlete -- extremely strong and fit but looks elegant in a tuxedo," said Horbury. "This concept is the ultimate expression of elegant simplicity consistent with the world's best Lincolns, and this new design language will lead us forward in the growing premium segment."
The 7 magnificent design features of MKR are: 1. clean and uncluttered body surfaces; 2. dynamic beltline; 3. surface running parallel to the beltline; 4. a twin-port "bow-wave" front grille inspired by the 1941 Continental Cabriolet; 5. stunning headlamps; 6. a substantial C-pillar that smoothly transitions into the roof; and 7. a pronounced roof rail.
The concept car is also equipped with Lincoln independent rear suspension mated to MacPherson struts. With regards, the interior of the car, the concept made use of environmentally-friendly and renewable materials that include cashmere leather, mohair carpet, oak instrument panel and seat cushion. THX-II is also featured in the car. Said feature is the trade name for hi-fi sound system reproduction that is recommended for theaters, car audio systems, gaming consoles, and more.
The next flagship sedan of Lincoln is the production version of MKS, which uses upgraded Lincoln LS 2002 parts. It will make its debut in 2008. The flagship sedan is greatly influenced by the MKR concept.
